Greatness of the Great Epic- Mahabharatha

When in deep contemplation, Vyasa had visualised the entire story and events of the Mahabharata as if it had occurred before his eyes. Thus inspired and by the power of his austerities, the sage was advised by Brahma (Creator God) to write the epic with Ganesha (God of Success)  as the scribe.

Vyasa saw 1) Srikshti (the creation)
                  2) Vedas (the first text),
                  3) Four Purusharthas (Aims of Human Life),
                         a) Dharma (righteousness, moral values),
                         b) Artha (prosperity, economic values),
                         c) Kama (pleasure, love, psychological values)
                         d) Moksha (liberation, spiritual values).
                  4) Code of conduct for mankind
Vyasa related everything concisely and comprehensively.

The greatness of the Mahabharata is acclaimed as a cut above even the Vedas. The learned and the wise of yore actually placed the four Vedas on one side of a balance and the Mahabharata on the other. The epic, with its depth of encyclopaedic content and richness of presentation of scriptural values, far outweighed the four Vedas famed for their mysterious and esoteric knowledge.

Mahabharata's sacred quality rests on the virtue it portrays. Wealth and possessions may belong to one only during one’s fleeting existence while virtue is his companion in his life after the present one. Knowing this epic completes the scholarship in one who is well versed in the scriptures.

In this story is subsumed all stories, and listening to this epic helps one to acquire merits equal to that of performing sacrifices, or giving 'Dhana' charity.
